Expanding Girls’ Horizons in Science & Engineering Month

March marks Expanding Girls’ Horizons in Science & Engineering Month, an initiative inspired by the work of the Expanding Your Horizons Network(EYH), which has been championing girls in STEM since 1974.

As a recruitment agency specialising in manufacturing and engineering across North Devon and beyond, this month is particularly meaningful to us. Because the future of engineering depends on who we inspire today.

The Gender Gap in STEM – Why Change Is Still Needed

Despite progress over the years, women still represent only around 28% of the science and engineering workforce, with even lower representation in areas such as engineering and computer science.

That’s not a pipeline issue of ability. It’s a visibility, encouragement, and opportunity issue.

For industries like manufacturing, aerospace, electronics, and advanced engineering, sectors we work in daily, diversity isn’t just about fairness. It’s about innovation. Different perspectives lead to better problem-solving, stronger teams, and more resilient businesses.

Why This Month Matters to Manufacturing & Engineering

We regularly speak to employers who struggle to attract skilled engineering talent. At the same time, many young girls still don’t see engineering or manufacturing as a “natural” career path.

That’s a disconnect we can help change.

Advanced electronics, automation, aerospace systems, renewable technologies, these fields are shaping the future. And they need creative, analytical, practical, and visionary minds.

There is no single “type” of engineer.

And there is absolutely room for more women at every level, from apprenticeships to senior leadership.

Our Commitment as a Recruitment Partner

As a specialist recruitment agency in manufacturing and engineering, we believe we have a responsibility beyond simply filling vacancies.

We aim to:

• Encourage inclusive hiring practices
• Support clients in widening their talent pipelines
• Promote engineering careers to a broader audience
• Highlight diverse success stories within the industries we serve

Because today’s awareness creates tomorrow’s workforce.

Looking Ahead

Expanding Girls’ Horizons in Science & Engineering Month is more than a calendar event, t’s a reminder that talent exists everywhere, but opportunity doesn’t always reach everyone equally. If we want a stronger, more innovative manufacturing and engineering sector, we must inspire the next generation, all of it.

The future of engineering should look like the world it serves. And we’re proud to play our part in building that future.
